Garmin Gtu 10 Live Gps Tracking Device

Garmin seems to be experimenting with a new live GPS tracking device called GTU 10 as we caught a glimpse of it in the FCC docs. It is not announced yet as they have a request to keep external, and internal photos, users manual, and test setup photos under cover for another 45 days.

We’re not exactly sure what market Garmin is after with the GTU 10 but the device is called “GSM/GPRS enabled GPS tracking device” and operates on GSM850 and PCS1900 frequencies. It is also powered by via USB port and that’s really all we can get the from the available FCC docs.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

Amber Alert Gps 2g

Amber Alert GPS today launched the Amber Alert GPS 2G, a GPS child tracking device. The device allows for parents to create a virtual safe zone, follow their kids bread crumb trail, and be alerted when their child reaches their destination. It even has voice monitoring, and even the ability to monitor the speed of a vehicle your child is riding in. There’s also the usual panic button that almost all live GPS tracking devices has.

The device itself costs a whopping $400 and you can pay between $10 to $60 for the service charge.

We think it is quite costly.

Indian Himalayas Gps Maps

Ever wanted to get your hands on GPS maps of far away places – whether it is just for vacation – or adventure? You already probably know names like Navteq or TeleAtlas can’t help you out much. Don’t even think about Garmin – we’re talking about places where cars won’t make – or never seen before.

Then you’re going to have to go with smaller names – people who make the GPS maps themselves. Guys here are working some GPS maps for your most remote travels plans and so far they have the following:

Indian Himalayas

Excellent maps of Ladakh that includes road from Kargil to Leh, Nubra & Shyok Valley, Zanskar Valley, Kargil and Dah Hanu, Shyok and the North East, Leh to Tso Moriri, and even extreme South East.

Another set of maps are for Lahaul AND Spiti, which is split into Manali to Keylong, Manali to Spiti, Spiti West and Spiti East, Lingti Valley, Pin Valley, and Kinnaur to Spiti.

There’s even the maps for the part from Keylong in Lahaul up to Leh – not found anywhere else.

Sri Lanka

For Sri Lanka the there are 20 maps which cover main roads, secondary roads, small roads, and even 4 wheel drive and dirt tracks. Maps are about 6500×7500 pixels where each one is about 4-5 MBs. There are also detailed town maps for most cities and tourist destinations including Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Anuradapura, etc.

Maldives

GPS maps for Maldives include 11 maps, based on very accurate measurements and high resolution satellite images. The capital city of Male will have a street level map very soon.

  • Integrated Bluetooth 2.0
  • Integrated GPS
  • 2 integrated cameras

  • SDIO slot
  • Outdoor rugged design
  • 7? sunlight readable touchscreen display
  • Light Weight (2.6 lb. with standard batteries)

Trimble Yuma runs Windows Vista Business, and meets MIL-STD-810F military standards for drops, vibration and humidity. Its IP67 rating means it’s impervious to dust and water and it operates in temperatures from -30 to 60 °C. Yuma can be mounted on a tripod or pole for data collection, or even secured in a vehicle-mount. Not bad at all.

However do not get your hopes up to see this at a store near you. Trimble Yuma is designed for public safety, field service, forestry, utilities, mapping, and or military related applications. If you don’t have a government contract you probably won’t be able to afford one.

Clarion Mind – Now A Lot Cheaper

Clarion MiND – since we last visited – has it’s own page now showing off its features. And even though it says you can grab one as low as $500, Amazon is not taking any chances and is willing to get rid of them for $250.

What do you think of this price? Are you willing to spend $250 for a WiFi enabled device with a 4.8″ screen and 4GB of flash memory? It is also bluetooth enabled which is good – but it is only way to get wireless internet when you are not close to any WiFi hotspots. You’d have to pair it up with your phone to get connectivity. Anyhow – what can Clarion MiND do for you? GPS navigation, play your tunes, new traffic updates service, and Google Local search.

LocatioNet Systems teamed up with mobile operator Optimus to launch the “amAze” service in Portugal.

amAze is an over the air GPS navigation service that will be offered to the Optimus users in Portugal for free but supported with ads.

It seems to offer all the features you’d expect from a paid service such as full navigation and mapping, local search, weather, speed traps alerts, traffic and more. It works on all Java phones as well as WinMo devices. Apparently support for Android and iPhone platforms is to follow.

Sony Hdr-tg5v Handycam Has Gps And Maps

Sony just keeps adding GPS receivers to their camcorders. Back in January we talked about HDR-XR520V, HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR200V which were the first camcorders to include a GPS receiver and maps. Today Sony announced HDR-TG5V Handycam, a small hi-def camcorder that integrates a GPS receiver.

The camcorder’s built-in GPS antenna and NAVTEQ digital maps geo-tag your videos and photos so you can document your destinations on a map. Geo-tagged content is marked by a push pin at each shot location and can be played back on the camcorder map index display on the 2.7-inch (measured diagonally) wide LCD touch panel. You can also enjoy this feature on the PC using the included Picture Motion Browser software.

A small issue here is that there’s really no industry standard for storing location information in video format so you’ll have to use Sony’s proprietary software to make use of the GPS features.

You can expect to pay $1000 for Sony HDR-TG5V starting this May.

Becker Traffic Assist Pro Z 302 Truck Navigation

Our European penpal Becker has come with a new GPS navigation system for trucks. It is called Becker Traffic Assist Pro Z 302.

Becker Traffic Assist Pro Z 302, is their first mobile truck navigation system. The truck drivers can define profiles that are tailored specifically to his/her vehicle and payload. This profile includes details such as height, width, length, axle number, and weight which is then analyzed to calculate the optimal route. Impassable roads, tunnels and bridges are excluded depending on the profile data and possible, alternative routes are offered for selection in a map view so that the driver can choose the best route for him.

The device also includes a remote controller (see photo above) which would especially be helpful if you were not able to reach the windshield. In case you’re not following – this is a GPS navigation system for trucks. Other features include bluetooth connectivity, 3D buildings and landscapes, text-to-speech, TMC traffic updates, and of course a relatively large 4.3″ touch screen.

Tomtom Xxl 530s

TomTom XXL 530S is the new GPS navigation system from the company. First thing that catches our attention here is the “XXL” of course. Why XXL? Because the screen measures 5″.

Just released for the U.S. and Canada markets, the TomTom XXL 530S will offer the IQ Routes Technology which claims to save time and fuel by providing the most optimal route. It does this by utilizing historical speed measurements for every time of day and for every road segment, from large highways to small roads.

Other than that a couple other things worth mentioning are the awesome window mounts that come with the device and the TomTom map share technology that lets users edit/correct maps.

TomTom XXL 530S will cost $280 when it comes out in October.

Tele Atlas Adds Reality To Navigation With 3d

Tele Atlas announced this morning that it will be adding 3D Advanced City Models to its portfolio of mapping innovations. Advanced City Models use BLOM aerial imagery to create a photorealistic map that crosses over more accurately to the real world, in essence making navigation simpler. For now, it looks like Tele Atlas will focus mainly on big city centers with a release in Europe next month, followed by more cities in subsequent quarterly releases.

The TomTom-owned digital mapping powerhouse says it expects to cover hundreds of cities with Advanced City Models in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific by 2010. Tele Atlas maps are used on TomTom, Mio and Pioneer portable navigation devices, as well as Sony’s PSP and Google’s navigation products.

Maestro 4700 Gps

Rich Owings of the excellent GPS Tracklog publication did some digging through the FCC database and of all things he found the Magellan Maestro 4700. We haven’t seen anything substantial from Magellan in a while as it’s undergone some consolidation after being purchased by MiTAC, also the parent of Mio. So this surprised me, but FCC filings don’t lie. According to the user manual (PDF), the latest Maestro will support voice commands, have a 4.7-inch OneTouch user interface, Bluetooth and traffic alerts. Nothing special by the looks of it. Magellan hasn’t announced a price or release date (or anything at all for that matter) but I’m sure it’ll come in short order.

Medion Gopal P4445

MEDION GoPal P4445 is quite new in Europe. It offers an unusual flat screen measuring 4.7″, maps of Europe (Q4/2008), Traffic Message Channel receiver, 2GB internal memory, text-to-Speech, MP3 player, Bluetooth, and even a fingerprint sensor. The GPS receiver is SiRF starIII which comes with SiRFInstantFixII. All the heavy weight is lifted by the Samsung 400 MHz processor.

What makes Medion GoPal 4445 more high-end than most other devices out there is the voice commands capability. In order to keep your hands on the wheel, the GPS navigation system can be controlled easily by voice whether it is address input, volume or traffic information – the device understands a variety of commands.

Mobiado Grand 350prl

Mobiado has a new luxury phone out called Grand 350PRL. We do not really care too much about these luxury phones unless they have a GPS receiver. Mobiado Grand 350PRL - which was just announced today - has a good set of features which integrates a GPS receiver.

The device comes unlocked and will work anywhere within the GSM/EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 network range. It also does HSDPA, come with 3.5MP camera, has a sharp 2.36″ screen, bluetooth, and a micro USB card reader.

Tomtom Xl 340s Live

TomTom just announced TomTom XL 340S Live. This is a mid-range GPS navigation system from the company with connected services. It will go for $300 which will include 3 months live connected services which we just mentioned. These include things like local search from Google, real-time traffic updates, weather information, and the cheapest fuel prices around.

TomTom XL 340S Live has a 4.3″ touch screen and is quite similar to the TomTom XL 740 Live. However it lacks bluetooth connectivity for hands free calling – and the live services are on AT&T’s network.

Another cool feature with this new GPS navigation system is that it uses TomTom QuickGPSfix which utilizes A-GPS to get a satellite location fix faster.

The connected services for TomTom XL 340S Live will cost $10/month after the first month.

New Gps Satellite Launching In 4 Days

Delta II is ready to launch the Air Force’s Global Positioning System IIR-20 on March 24 from Cape Canaveral Florida. Called GPS IIR-20M, this is the seventh modernized NAVSTAR Global Positioning System Block II R-M military navigation satellite to launch.

IIR-20M satellite carries the new frequency channel L5 demo which is the first of its kind and no other orbiting GPS satellites have the capability to transmit on this frequency.

This is kind of critical for the U.S. since their future plans for GPS are mostly based on this L5 signal. And if the launch gets delayed past August 26th of this year they’ll lose their rights to use that frequency.

Pioneer Avic-z3

Pioneer AVIC-Z3 is a double DIN in-dash HDD based GPS navigation system. It is the most expensive from the manufacturer, with an MSRP of $1800 (however Amazon has Pioneer AVIC-Z3 for $1310). It has some impressive navigation features, so let’s go over those in more detail:

  • point addressing: many destinations are geocoded to a precise point instead of an address range.
  • 3D landmarks
  • high resolution display of traffic conditions
  • voice recognition of POIs without having to choose a category
  • text-to-speech
  • compatible with XM NAVTRAFFIC for live traffic updates

That’s all for navigation but that’s not what Pioneer AVIC-Z3 can do. The device is bluetooth capable so you can pair up a compatible phone. There’s a 30GB HDD, 10GB of which is dedicated to your tunes; and can be accessed with your voice. You can also bring your iPod in and control it using the 7″ touchscreen. Telenav Shotgun - Round 2

In November right before Turkey Day I did a review of the TeleNav Shotgun. Since then, the TeleNav engineers have been busy churning away and they provided me a new Shotgun with some update and some new added features. Let me start by saying I think the TeleNav Shotgun is an great product. It has a great interface, quality hardware and construction and a strong feature set! The problem with me reviewing a great product, especially a great product a 2nd time is that I tend to get even pickier when I’m using the device. SO, I might make some comments that sound nit-picky but that’s because they are nit-picky! TeleNav has done a great job in making the Shotgun great for most users, so now I’m going to point out the little tweaks I think could make it even better for at least this user. It may not sound fair, but its my $0.02 :)

To recap, the TeleNav shotgun is a a two-way, Internet-connected GPS Navigation device. The new features added in this release are:

  • The ability to track miles driven using TeleNav Shotgun. This is great for business travelers who can now save time they may have otherwise spent compiling this information themselves for their expense reports.
  • TeleNav Shotgun now also provides customers with ratings and reviews for various points of interest (POIs), including restaurants, hotels and shopping malls, and allows customers to rate the POIs directly from their device.
  • Another thing worth mentioning is that that the annoying blue LED I complained about in the first review has been dimmed so its not as bright and noticeable anymore.

Let’s go into some more detail no the first added feature. With one click, users can track the miles driven on their TeleNav Shotgun device.

The entire route can be tracked or the driver can start and stop tracking miles at any time when receiving turn-by-turn navigation or while in map ‘follow me’ mode. Using the My TeleNav website, users can view and download reports in Microsoft Excel or Adobe PDF files. The mileage data will remain online at My TeleNav for up to 24 months.

The second new feature is the Business Rating & Reviews. These ratings are based on a 5-star scale. When you search for a business you will see its rating and have the ability to rate it yourself as the following pictures show. I will highlight that the Search feature on the TeleNav Shotgun is very good. Everything I’ve looked for, including business that aren’t restaurants has been found. It found my Physical Therapy once I entered the the first few letters of the name with ease and the search is quick.

Now that the new features have been reviewed I’ll discuss some of the other aspects of the TeleNav Shotgun I may have not talked about previously or didn’t notice my first go-around with the unit.

I discovered an interesting ‘feature’ with this device. If my SIM card door was not closed all the way I would loose my Internet connection. What I noticed was that when I was driving down the highway, some days the Shotgun would tell me to get off at Exit 351, and other days it would tell me to get off at Priest Drive. The difference was when I had an internet connection. Apparently, with an internet connection the device would talk in Exit #’s and otherwise it would use street names. Personally I like both and I think the device should display both, maybe by flashing between the two on the top of the screen.

The only real thing I find lacking on the Shotgun is that I wish it posted the speed limit information on the main screen. The device has access to speed limit information is, because on the Traffic Summary screen it shows what the speed of traffic is, and colors it based on how it relates to what the speed limit is for that road.

In summary, other than the lack of Speed Limit information, I really enjoy using the TeleNav Shotgun. The latest features added are cool and I’m happy they dimmed the Blue LED. It is much less noticeable but I’d still rather it didn’t’ blink. The only thing I really have to complain about is that the power cable plugs into the left side of the unit. Since in the US the driver side is on the left side of the car, I find this slightly annoying because the power cable crosses across my console/radio etc. If it plugged into the right site of the unit it would be more out of the way visually and functionally.

Ecco Gps Locator

Ecco GPS Locator is a little handy GPS device that can help you locate things, places, etc. Not to be confused with GPS vehicle tracking, this little thing can only mark where you are – but can’t transmit its location back to you or anyone else. It is what we like to call a GPS backtracker.

Let’s say you’re visiting a new city and want to take a walk outside and discover some places. It would be a good idea to mark your position as soon as your step out your hotel, so you can always head back safely. It actually lets you store up to 3 locations – so why not another for where you parked your rental, and another for the restaurant you saw on the way. Ecco GPS locator is as small as a basic key fob and doesn’t look much different other than the blue backlit LCD screen. It can track 32 satellites at once and promises to get you a position fix in 60 seconds.

When it is time to head back to one of your marked spots this GPS locator can you show you the distance and an arrow pointing where you need to go. Imperial or metric. It measures 1.5×0.5×3 inches. Costs $99 on Amazon.

Gps Theft –how To Prevent It

The increasing popularity of satellite navigation units or GPS devices has also seen an increase in its theft too. Quite a handful of vehicles break-ins were reported recently with the GPS units stolen from the vehicles. Leaving the GPS unit mounted to the windshield is one of the main reasons for attracting thieves. And if it is turned on, it acts as a beacon giving ‘I am-here’ signals to the person. To ensure safety of your GPS device, you must always make sure that you close the windows and lock the doors of your car before leaving it. Flicking a GPS unit takes nothing more than a few seconds. And if the GPS is attached to your bicycle or motorcycle, make sure that you remove it and slip it in your pocket before leaving your vehicle.

Having a GPS auto theft recovery system is a must these days. With an anti-theft GPS system in place, you can be rest assured that your vehicle can be easily tracked, no matter where the thief takes it. Here again, make sure that you track your vehicle within a few minutes after the theft, before any damage can be done to your vehicle or to the GPS unit by the thief. You will also come across GPS theft protection systems that send an alert to the owner when the car alarm goes off. This allows the owner to act quickly before anything happens.

Some tips as suggested by experts are:

• Make sure that you always roll up the windows and park your car in a well-lighted area.
• Make use of a car alarm system and always remember to keep it activated.
• Make note of your GPS serial number, for this will serve as a proof that the GPS belongs to you.

Using Tv Signals For Positioning

A company called Rosum has the ability to use TV signals to get a location fix where GPS signals can’t simply reach such as dense urban areas and indoors. There are many advantage to using TV signals instead of signals from GPS satellites.

First of these is power. Most of the time TV towers are about tens of miles from the device to be positioned so the signal ends up with approximately 40dB range - that is about ten thousand times stronger than GPS signals. (dB scale is logarithmic).

Second is the frequency. TV signals are at much lower frequency which allows for them to penetrate buildings. And a single TV tower can broadcast at multiple channels at once giving Rosum more options to choose from.

Last advantage would be the bandwith. In general, the wider the bandwidth of the signal, the more accurately one can resolve multipath. TV signals ranges from 6 MHz to 8MHz, however the bandwidth of the GPS satellite signal is 1MHz.

They have two different versions of their system. One of them is true TV-positioning and the other is TV + GPS Hybrid positioning. This second one takes the best part of each one. It relies on GPS signals in rural areas, and uses TV signals in urban and suburban areas.

We’re not sure who is using Rosum technology at the time but their site mentions that they’re focusing on mobile TV devices and home telecommunications.
