Amber Alert Gps 2g

Amber Alert GPS today launched the Amber Alert GPS 2G, a GPS child tracking device. The device allows for parents to create a virtual safe zone, follow their kids bread crumb trail, and be alerted when their child reaches their destination. It even has voice monitoring, and even the ability to monitor the speed of a vehicle your child is riding in. There’s also the usual panic button that almost all live GPS tracking devices has.

The device itself costs a whopping $400 and you can pay between $10 to $60 for the service charge.

We think it is quite costly.

Indian Himalayas Gps Maps

Ever wanted to get your hands on GPS maps of far away places – whether it is just for vacation – or adventure? You already probably know names like Navteq or TeleAtlas can’t help you out much. Don’t even think about Garmin – we’re talking about places where cars won’t make – or never seen before.

Then you’re going to have to go with smaller names – people who make the GPS maps themselves. Guys here are working some GPS maps for your most remote travels plans and so far they have the following:

Indian Himalayas

Excellent maps of Ladakh that includes road from Kargil to Leh, Nubra & Shyok Valley, Zanskar Valley, Kargil and Dah Hanu, Shyok and the North East, Leh to Tso Moriri, and even extreme South East.

Another set of maps are for Lahaul AND Spiti, which is split into Manali to Keylong, Manali to Spiti, Spiti West and Spiti East, Lingti Valley, Pin Valley, and Kinnaur to Spiti.

There’s even the maps for the part from Keylong in Lahaul up to Leh – not found anywhere else.

Sri Lanka

For Sri Lanka the there are 20 maps which cover main roads, secondary roads, small roads, and even 4 wheel drive and dirt tracks. Maps are about 6500×7500 pixels where each one is about 4-5 MBs. There are also detailed town maps for most cities and tourist destinations including Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Anuradapura, etc.

Maldives

GPS maps for Maldives include 11 maps, based on very accurate measurements and high resolution satellite images. The capital city of Male will have a street level map very soon.

Clarion Mind – Now A Lot Cheaper

Clarion MiND – since we last visited – has it’s own page now showing off its features. And even though it says you can grab one as low as $500, Amazon is not taking any chances and is willing to get rid of them for $250.

What do you think of this price? Are you willing to spend $250 for a WiFi enabled device with a 4.8″ screen and 4GB of flash memory? It is also bluetooth enabled which is good – but it is only way to get wireless internet when you are not close to any WiFi hotspots. You’d have to pair it up with your phone to get connectivity. Anyhow – what can Clarion MiND do for you? GPS navigation, play your tunes, new traffic updates service, and Google Local search.

Ad Supported Gps Navigation Out In Portugal

LocatioNet Systems teamed up with mobile operator Optimus to launch the “amAze” service in Portugal.

amAze is an over the air GPS navigation service that will be offered to the Optimus users in Portugal for free but supported with ads.

It seems to offer all the features you’d expect from a paid service such as full navigation and mapping, local search, weather, speed traps alerts, traffic and more. It works on all Java phones as well as WinMo devices. Apparently support for Android and iPhone platforms is to follow.

Check out all their short demo videos here.

Sony Hdr-tg5v Handycam Has Gps And Maps

Sony just keeps adding GPS receivers to their camcorders. Back in January we talked about HDR-XR520V, HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR200V which were the first camcorders to include a GPS receiver and maps. Today Sony announced HDR-TG5V Handycam, a small hi-def camcorder that integrates a GPS receiver.

The camcorder’s built-in GPS antenna and NAVTEQ digital maps geo-tag your videos and photos so you can document your destinations on a map. Geo-tagged content is marked by a push pin at each shot location and can be played back on the camcorder map index display on the 2.7-inch (measured diagonally) wide LCD touch panel. You can also enjoy this feature on the PC using the included Picture Motion Browser software.

A small issue here is that there’s really no industry standard for storing location information in video format so you’ll have to use Sony’s proprietary software to make use of the GPS features.

You can expect to pay $1000 for Sony HDR-TG5V starting this May.

Becker Traffic Assist Pro Z 302 Truck Navigation

Our European penpal Becker has come with a new GPS navigation system for trucks. It is called Becker Traffic Assist Pro Z 302.

Becker Traffic Assist Pro Z 302, is their first mobile truck navigation system. The truck drivers can define profiles that are tailored specifically to his/her vehicle and payload. This profile includes details such as height, width, length, axle number, and weight which is then analyzed to calculate the optimal route. Impassable roads, tunnels and bridges are excluded depending on the profile data and possible, alternative routes are offered for selection in a map view so that the driver can choose the best route for him.

The device also includes a remote controller (see photo above) which would especially be helpful if you were not able to reach the windshield. In case you’re not following – this is a GPS navigation system for trucks. Other features include bluetooth connectivity, 3D buildings and landscapes, text-to-speech, TMC traffic updates, and of course a relatively large 4.3″ touch screen.

Tomtom Xxl 530s

TomTom XXL 530S is the new GPS navigation system from the company. First thing that catches our attention here is the “XXL” of course. Why XXL? Because the screen measures 5″.

Just released for the U.S. and Canada markets, the TomTom XXL 530S will offer the IQ Routes Technology which claims to save time and fuel by providing the most optimal route. It does this by utilizing historical speed measurements for every time of day and for every road segment, from large highways to small roads.

Other than that a couple other things worth mentioning are the awesome window mounts that come with the device and the TomTom map share technology that lets users edit/correct maps.

TomTom XXL 530S will cost $280 when it comes out in October.
