Samsung Highlight Does Gps Navigation

T-Mobile and Samsung just recently announced the T-Mobile Highlight – a pretty sleek phone with GPS navigation capabilities.

That’s not all though – one of the smallest 3G touchscreen devices on the market – the Highlight T749 offers high speed connection (HSDPA) , 3MP camera, bluetooth, and a microSD card slot.

For only $150 – after a 2 year contract and a $50 mail in rebate – you can browse the internets with a full HTML browser on T-Mo’s 3G network and use the pre-installed GPS navigation software from TeleNav.

Nokia 6710 Navigator

Nokia just added the new Nokia 6710 to its Navigator series phones. 6710 uses the new integration of Nokia Maps with Ovi which allows users to pre-plan their journey on a PC and sync with their device.

Nokia which currently owns Navteq - one of the leading digital mappers in the world - is pretty much competing with stand alone GPS navigation systems with Nokia 6710, offering drive and walk navigation, full regional maps, a dedicated navigator key, a touch area for easy zooming, and a large 2.6″ that’s bright enough to be visible under sunlight.

Other features of Nokia Maps, which is now at version 3.0 include high-resolution aerial images, 3D landmarks for over 200 cities, terrain maps, weather service, premium travel and events content and traffic and safety warnings.

Nokia 6710 Navigator will be available starting third quarter of this year for about 300 €.

Here are some specs for the 6710:

  • Dimensions: 104.8 x 50.1 x 14.9 mm
  • Resolution: 320 x 240 pixels (QVGA)
  • Ambient light detector
  • 2 GB MicroSD card (with pre-loaded mega region maps)

Using Tv Signals For Positioning

A company called Rosum has the ability to use TV signals to get a location fix where GPS signals can’t simply reach such as dense urban areas and indoors. There are many advantage to using TV signals instead of signals from GPS satellites.

First of these is power. Most of the time TV towers are about tens of miles from the device to be positioned so the signal ends up with approximately 40dB range - that is about ten thousand times stronger than GPS signals. (dB scale is logarithmic).

Second is the frequency. TV signals are at much lower frequency which allows for them to penetrate buildings. And a single TV tower can broadcast at multiple channels at once giving Rosum more options to choose from.

Last advantage would be the bandwith. In general, the wider the bandwidth of the signal, the more accurately one can resolve multipath. TV signals ranges from 6 MHz to 8MHz, however the bandwidth of the GPS satellite signal is 1MHz.

They have two different versions of their system. One of them is true TV-positioning and the other is TV + GPS Hybrid positioning. This second one takes the best part of each one. It relies on GPS signals in rural areas, and uses TV signals in urban and suburban areas.

We’re not sure who is using Rosum technology at the time but their site mentions that they’re focusing on mobile TV devices and home telecommunications.
